Read Matthew 28:18-20

18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Read Matthew 9:35-38

35
Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

Discuss:

1) Does the great commission (Matthew 28) apply to Christians alive today? How do we know?
2) What would it look like to fulfil the great commission?
3) Why does Jesus have compassion on the crowds that he sees?
4) Where do you see evidence of people today being ‘harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd’?
5) What are the disciples instructed to do in response to the crowds?
6) How much of your prayer life is asking God to send people out into the harvest field?

Apply:

1) What is currently the biggest thing holding you back from making disciples? Lack of confidence? Lack of urgency? Lack of opportunities?

2) Who in your life do you have the opportunity to intentionally aim to reach with the gospel?

3) Are there any people (or groups of people) who you feel a particular compassion for?

Apply & Pray:

1. How do you tend to perceive God? As a God of grace or a God of Law?
2. What promises of God are you struggling to believe this week?
