The Way of Jesus.

Week 19 - Dealing with doubt.

Announcement: No ‘Try something new’ this week. Prepare a team for a new and improved Pub Trivia next week.

READ: MATTHEW 11:1-11

After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.

When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”

Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”

As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces. Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is the one about whom it is written:

“‘I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way before you.’

11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

Take 10 minutes alone with your bible and some paper/pen and worth through the following: (Ie turn off microphones and camera but leave the call active so the leader can call you back.)

Read over this passage slowly
Write Down:

1) Are there any words or phrases that really stand out to you in this moment?

2) What would be causing John to doubt whether Jesus was the messiah:

a) about Jesus’ deeds that we have seen in the last few chapters

b) about his own situation

3) What does Jesus’ response teach us about doubt?

Come back together.

Discuss

As you spent time in the passage, was there anything that you felt that God really wanted to highlight for you?

What has been your experience of having times of doubt as you follow Jesus?

What has helped you when you have doubted?

Share and pray (break into smaller groups if your group is large)
1. How are you going with trusting Jesus at the moment? are the any areas you are doubting that you would like prayer for?

2. Are there people in your life that you would like to pray for opportunities to invite to the ‘Doubt’ series in October?

Extra Resources: Encourage people to look over these resources that may be helpful for those who are doubting.
