READ PSALM 1
PSALM 1
1 Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
whatever they do prospers.
4 Not so the wicked!
They are like chaff
that the wind blows away.
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
6 For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.
DISCUSS
1. What stands out to you from this passage?
2. Psalm 1 Provides a picture of two type of people. How does the psalmist describe a life that doesn’t lead to blessing?
3. How does the Psalmist describe a life that leads to blessing?
4. In what ways is being someone who is continuiously being nourished by God’s word akin to a tree planted by streams of water?
5. The wicked are described as being easily blown around, having no roots of sturdiness. How do you see this dynamic at play in the world around us?
APPLY
To what extent are you currently drawing on God’s word for daily nourishment? What does that actually look like for you at the moment?
Is there anywhere else that you are consuming thoughts or ideas that you sense leading you towards sinful ways of thinking or acting?
What things could you cut out (apps, devices, habits) to create more space in your day to spend time with God in his word?
Has anyone found a particular method, time of day, set of questions, etc helpful in building a practice of regular scripture reading into their life?
